Our Celluloid Prince by Corey Niles | flash fiction | #thesideshow

Look at him.

Eternal. Captured on the silver screen. Gold curls and a timid nature. And those eyes. Sad eyes that you could get lost in. We love him. We want to be him. We want to pull him to our bosom with such force that it breaks his back so that we can care for the poor baby. Slowly make him better with tender kisses and sweet words. But never well enough to leave us.

Look at him.

Celluloid prince. Tight smile and soft lips. And blue eyes that pierce right through your heart. We want him, even though he’s gone. We curse that damn silver Porsche that took him from us far too young. We never got the chance to know him as well as his fortunate loved ones. But we understand him more than they ever would. We love him. We would break off pieces of the burnt rubble to remember him if we were old enough to be there. A keepsake of our fallen icon. Encase it in glass to protect it from this cruel world. Like he should have been protected from everyone else but us.

Look at him.

A fallen star. Six feet under ground. Those soft lips and blue eyes rotting. Those golden curls going white. We visit his grave. We pose in front of the stone with sad eyes and a tight smile. We chisel a piece of granite to remember him. We love him. We understand him. We want to thrust our bare hands into the cold earth and keep digging until we find him. Tenderly pluck the white hair from his skull and swallow it. Crush up his brittle bones and snort them so that he’ll always be a part of us. Climb into his coffin and stay there with him forever. Eternal.
