THE VEIL BETWEEN WORLDS GROWS THIN.
Halloween is a time for parties and chocolate, but it’s also a time where the veil between this world and the spirit world is said to grow thin – a time where ghosts roam the earth, strange noises can be heard, and we like to induce fear in ourselves and others by sharing spooky stories and watching horror movies. These songs, too, are designed to create an atmosphere of fear in either their lyrics or their melody.
Opening with a classic ‘witchy’ anthem in I Put a Spell on You, this playlist goes on to include everything from reimagined children’s songs in All the Pretty Little Horses and Jan Pierewiet, instrumentals from Joseph Bishara and Mephisto Walz, and all manner of songs incorporating unsettling imagery. You will not find any music-box jingling or childlike whispering here – I’m aiming for the sorts of songs that unsettle me, though for the scariest thing I’ve seen in a long time, I have to recommend a video by a YouTube channel called Local58 titled Contingency. No gore, no jumpscares – and no further spoilers from me, just a recommendation to check it, and this playlist, out.
Jan Pierewiet is a traditional children’s song, but this arrangement is not for children. All songs contain general horror themes.
