Etiology is the study of causation. I can look at a minivan smoldering on the median and dispassionately consider impact velocity, blood-alcohol level, sun glare, etc and etc.
Etiologists also study the origins of disease. My family has a disease. I am in the right line of work.
An Etiologist uses Latin words, which I like because they sound official. Actus rea and mens rea are much more impressive ways of saying action and state of mind.
In trying to connect the two, I am examining the sticks of furniture, the shags of carpet, the Christmas tree carcasses upon which black snowflakes have gathered.
